Orchestra Sinfonica di Milano

Nicolò Umberto Foron is a German-Italian conductor whose exceptional talent has been recognized through major international accolades, including first prize at the Donatella Flick London Symphony Orchestra Conducting Competition in 2023 and at the International Conducting Competition “Jeunesses Musicales” in Bucharest in 2021. Frequently featured on Classic FM, where his videos have reached millions of views, Nicolò was named among the “30 Under 30” artists of 2025.

In recent years, Foron has established collaborations with a wide range of leading orchestras, including the London Symphony Orchestra, Mozarteumorchester Salzburg, Sächsische Staatskapelle Dresden, Staatskapelle Weimar, Symfonieorkest Vlaanderen, Orchestra Sinfonica Nazionale della Rai, Philharmonisches Orchester Freiburg, Orchestre National d’Île-de-France, Orchestre de Chambre de Lausanne, Opéra national de Montpellier and Opéra national de Lorraine, among many others. He has appeared at some of Europe’s most prestigious venues, including the Elbphilharmonie Hamburg with Deutsche Stiftung Musikleben, the Wiener Konzerthaus with the Wiener Kammerorchester, the Concertgebouw Amsterdam and Die Glocke Bremen.

Recent and forthcoming collaborations include appearances with Ensemble intercontemporain, Arktisk Filharmoni, Pannon Philharmonic Orchestra in a tour featuring Viktoria Mullova, BBC Symphony Orchestra at the Barbican, Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra at Musiikkitalo, Bremer Philharmoniker, Cameristi della Scala, Odense Symfoniorkester, Euskadiko Orkestra, Rotterdams Philharmonisch Orkest, Orchestra Haydn, SWR Symphonieorchester, Orquesta de Extremadura, Filarmonica Arturo Toscanini and Orchestre de Chambre Nouvelle-Aquitaine. His festival appearances include MiTo Settembre Musica and the Festival della Valle d’Itria, where he opens the 2026 edition with a double bill of Stravinsky’s Pulcinella and Casella’s La favola di Orfeo.

The 2026/27 season opens with the European Union Youth Orchestra’s Music Hub Project in Bolzano, followed by engagements with the Aalborg Symphony Orchestra, Filarmonica della Scala, Dortmunder Philharmoniker, Orquesta Sinfónica de Bilbao, Orchestra Sinfonica di Milano, Kymi Sinfonietta, Orchestra del Teatro Petruzzelli—including both a symphonic concert and a new production of Le nozze di Figaro—Staatskapelle Halle, Orchestra del Teatro Regio di Torino and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra as part of the RPO Newbury Festival.
Under Nicolò’s baton, a recording with the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra featuring soloist Annelien Van Wauwe—performing Aaron Copland’s and Gerald Finzi’s Clarinet Concertos—will be released by Pentatone in February 2027.
Renowned for his versatility, Foron is equally at home in symphonic and operatic repertoire and has conducted numerous world premieres. Operatic highlights include Mozart’s Le nozze di Figaro at the Riccardo Muti Italian Opera Academy, Humperdinck’s Hänsel und Gretel, Walter Kollo’s operetta Jettchen Gebert at Musikalische Komödie Leipzig, as well as premieres of contemporary Dutch operas.
Foron’s musical journey began at an early age with studies in conducting, composition, and piano—his first instrument. He studied with renowned pianists including Karl-Heinz Kämmerling and Anatol Ugorski, and began conducting studies with Jorma Panula at the age of ten. As a teenager, he participated in Bernard Haitink's masterclasses at the Lucerne Festival before continuing his studies at the Conservatorium van Amsterdam. He went on to complete a master's degree at the Royal College of Music and an Advanced Diploma in Performance at the Royal Academy of Music in London, graduating in 2021. Alongside conducting, he continues to perform as a concert pianist, frequently collaborating with his sister, violinist Mira Foron.
During the pandemic, Foron conducted the Noord Nederlands Orkest in a livestream and CD recording featuring Jan-Peter de Graaff’s Cello Concerto, which received a nomination for the Preis der deutschen Schallplattenkritik. In 2023, he was named Artist in Residence by Deutschlandfunk (German National Broadcasting), an appointment that led to a concert and recording project with the Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester Berlin. The resulting album was released by Deutsche Grammophon / Avi in the summer of 2025.
In June 2026, Foron was shortlisted for the OPUS KLASSIK 2026 in the “Young Artist of the Year” category in recognition of his Deutsche Grammophon recording of Berlioz’s Symphonie fantastique and Lili Boulanger’s D’un soir triste.
