Tanja Ariane Baumgartner is one of the leading mezzo-sopranos of our time. With her portrayals of Fricka (Rheingold/Die Walküre), the brilliant Kundry (Parsifal), Klytämnestra (Elektra) and the Nurse (Die Frau ohne Schatten) as well as her spectacular Ortrud (Lohengrin), she has established herself at the forefront of the dramatic mezzo-soprano repertoire, appearing at the most important international opera houses and festivals.
The 2026/27 season begins for Tanja Ariane Baumgartner with concert performances of Tristan und Isolde with the Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France, where she will sing the role of Brangäne under the baton of Jaap van Zweden. At the Vienna State Opera, she will also take on the role of Brangäne in Tristan und Isolde, as well as Countess Geschwitz in Alban Berg's Lulu. Opernhaus Zürich she stands as Klytämnestra, she will be on stage in Richard Strauss's Elektra in a new production by Lydia Steier. Further opera engagements will take her to the Gran Teatre del Liceu in Barcelona, where she will sing the role of Fricka in Das Rheingold directed by Tobias Kratzer. Opernhaus Zürich she will also appear as Fricka in the concert performance of the Ring Cycle at the Philharmonie de Paris and Carnegie Hall in New York. In concert, she will sing Mahler's Das Lied von der Erde in Milan under the musical direction of Emmanuel Tjeknavorian.

and at the San Francisco Opera, Herodias in concert performances of Salome with the WDR Symphony Orchestra, as well as at the Lyric Opera of Chicago, Ortrud in the new production of Lohengrin (Johannes Erath/Joana Mallwitz) in the Festspielhaus Baden-Baden, Venus (Tannhäuser) in Hamburg in the new production by Tcherniakov as well as at the Opernhaus Zürich, Brangäne (Tristan und Isolde) at the Deutsche Oper Berlin, Carmen at the Royal Opera House Covent Garden in London, Judith (Blaubarts Burg) at the Edinburgh Festival, Agaue (The Bassarids) at the Komische Oper Berlin, Kostelnicka (Jenůfa) in Santiago de Chile, as well as her debut with Schönberg's Erwartung at WDR.

Tanja Ariane Baumgartner was a member of the Oper Frankfurt ensemble from 2009 to 2020. Among her successes there are the title role in Schoeck's Penthesilea, the Nurse in Die Frau ohne Schatten, Eboli (Don Carlo), Azucena (Il trovatore), Principessa de Bouillon (Adriana Lecouvreur), Clairon (Capriccio), Gaea in Daphne, Preziosilla, Foreign the Princess (Rusalka), Brangäne, Cornelia (Giulio Cesare in Egitto), Gora in the German premiere of Reimann's Medea (released on CD by OehmsClassics), Jocasta (Oedipe) and Charlotte (Werther).
Concerts have taken the mezzo-soprano to the Salzburg Festival with Mahler's Das Lied von der Erde, to the Musikverein and Vienna Konzerthaus with the Vienna Philharmonic, as well as to Munich and Hamburg with the Munich Philharmonic. She appeared as a guest soloist with the Singapore Symphony Orchestra in Mahler's Symphony No. 2. She sang Beethoven's Symphony No. 9 under the baton of Sebastian Weigle in Tokyo, in Paris with the Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France, and at the Berlin Konzerthaus under Joana Mallwitz. She most recently sang Verdi's Requiem under Thomas Guggeis in Frankfurt. She performed Glanert's Prague Symphony with the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra in Amsterdam.

Tanja Ariane Baumgartner initially studied violin at the Freiburg University of Music, then voice in Karlsruhe, Vienna, and Sofia. She is a professor at the Basel Academy of Music/FHNW.
