Coro Sinfonico di Milano
Founded in 1998 under the musical direction of Romano Gandolfi, the Coro Sinfonico di Milano was established as the resident chorus of the Orchestra Sinfonica di Milano. Following Maestro Gandolfi’s passing, leadership of the Chorus was entrusted to Erina Gambarini (2007–2018), who had served as Assistant Chorus Director since its foundation, and subsequently to Massimo Fiocchi Malaspina, its current Chorus Master.
Since its inception, the Coro Sinfonico di Milano has embraced the great choral-orchestral, chamber, and polyphonic repertoire, spanning from the Baroque period to the twentieth century, earning widespread acclaim from audiences and critics alike for its musical excellence and interpretative depth.
Throughout the Orchestra Sinfonica di Milano’s concert seasons, the Chorus has performed many of the most significant works in the repertoire under the baton of some of the leading conductors on the international scene. Highlights include Verdi’s Quattro pezzi sacri and Messa da Requiem, Rossini’s Stabat Mater, Bach’s St John Passion and St Matthew Passion, Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9, and major choral masterpieces by Haydn (The Seasons, The Creation), Brahms (A German Requiem), Mendelssohn (St Paul), Handel (Messiah), Shostakovich (Symphony No. 2), and Dallapiccola (Volo di notte).

Among its most notable projects are Benjamin Britten’s War Requiem, conducted by Xian Zhang at Teatro alla Scala in 2011 to mark the tenth anniversary of the September 11 attacks, and Mahler’s Symphony No. 8, conducted by Riccardo Chailly in 2013. The Chorus has also performed on two occasions at the Vatican’s Paul VI Audience Hall (Sala Nervi), in concerts offered to His Holiness Pope Benedict XVI by the President of the Italian Republic, Giorgio Napolitano.
Alongside its long-standing collaboration with the Orchestra Sinfonica di Milano, the Coro Sinfonico di Milano has taken part in productions with major Italian and international orchestras. Notable appearances include Verdi’s Macbeth conducted by Riccardo Frizza at the Festival dei Due Mondi di Spoleto (2002), Verdi’s Requiem conducted by Riccardo Chailly at the Leipzig Opera with the Gewandhaus Orchestra and Chorus, Mendelssohn’s Oedipus at Colonus conducted by György Győriványi Ráth at the Lingotto in Turin, and Berlioz’s Te Deum conducted by Claudio Abbado in Bologna (2008).
In recent years, the Chorus has participated in major international tours. In 2022, it performed Verdi’s Requiem, conducted by Claus Peter Flor, at Amsterdam’s Concertgebouw and in several Spanish cities. In 2023 and 2024, it appeared at Germany’s Rheingau Musik Festival with Verdi’s Requiem under Claus Peter Flor and Orff’s Carmina Burana conducted by Emmanuel Tjeknavorian. In 2024, the Chorus returned to the KKL Luzern to perform Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9 under the direction of Emmanuel Tjeknavorian.
In 2023, the Coro Sinfonico di Milano celebrated its 25th anniversary, alongside the 30th anniversary of the Orchestra Sinfonica di Milano, by participating in the Mahler Festival, performing Mahler’s Symphonies Nos. 2, 3, and 8.
Beginning with the 2025/26 Season, the Coro Sinfonico di Milano has become the focus of a major development and enhancement programme aimed at strengthening its artistic excellence and expanding its activities towards new artistic horizons.
In 2023, the Coro Sinfonico di Milano celebrated its 25th anniversary, alongside the 30th anniversary of the Orchestra Sinfonica di Milano, by participating in the Mahler Festival, performing Mahler’s Symphonies Nos. 2, 3, and 8.
